Rapper K.I. Takes No-Nonsense Tone on Sophomore CD, 'It's Personal' (Album Review)

Bridgeport rapper K.I. wasn't kidding when he called his new album "It's Personal" (Music Unlimted Records).

It is indeed personal, a collection of boasts, grudges and, perhaps surprisingly for a genre that prizes unyielding toughness, a few deeply tender moments. "It's Personal" is K.I.'s second official album, after a handful of mixtapes and
his 2010 debut, "Writing is My Therapy."

He has plenty to write about. Born Kenneth Eaddy, K.I. grew up in Bridgeport, which supplies a thread of underdog pride that runs through his songs. He raps in gruff, no-nonsense tones that sometimes verge on a sneer, delivering tumbles of intricate lyrics over deep bass notes, clapping beats and spare synthesizer melodies.

On the title track, K.I. calls out a roster of organizations he sees career impediments, from WZMX-FM (Hot 93.7) to Def Jam Records, and he punctuates each grouping by spitting out the refrain, "It's personal." He's not made of stone, though: K.I. kicks back on "Poppin Bottles," rhyming in a sing-song voice about a night at the club. It's a fitting lead-in to the next song, "Sweat Drippin," an inventive catalog of ideas for, well, let's call it passion, delivered (and apparently performed) at dizzying speed.

The Rap Game has Been Changed By Debut Project (Album Review)

The rap game has just been taken up a notch with K.I.'s debut album, Writing is My Therapy.  Starting off with the hit single, "Troubled Waters", you feel the energy and presence that K.I. brings, which is that of maturity and progress from the vantage point of the streets.  K.I. blends deep messages of familiar inner-city struggles with a grown-man attitude that puts most of today's popular music at the kid's table.  This album not only appeals to an older audience who understands the identity K.I. represents, but also to a younger crowd who can view the messages as lessons told by the proverbial O.G.  Writing is My Therapy is definitely a must have album, and if this is any indication of the talent K.I. brings to the rap game, you can expect his career to soar in the near future while others take note of what's hot.

Debut Album Raises The Bar For Future Rappers (Album Review)

"We love to label people in rap--conscious, gangsta, back packer. Good luck labeling K.I., who's as loose as his jeans would be on Bow Wow's frame. But you'll no doubt recognize him as one of the most distinct voices in hip-hop. And, you'll never question his grit, passion, and his ability to breathe fire on the mic. Just check the 2011 standout "Writing is My Therapy." K.I.'s attempt to tell his semi-biographical story is effortless and flawless. What lesser artists grind at he smoothly delivers. K.I. and his music are so intertwined that no video is need to to get a feel for what he's trying to say. As a debut album, Writing is My Therapy is so good that I'm already anticipating his next one."
